Summer’s Most Common Electrical Complaint

When the first stretch of real heat settles over the Kansas City metro, a familiar call starts coming in: the air conditioner runs for a while, then a breaker trips. Or the lights dim every time the condenser starts. Or the AC breaker holds all day but trips on the hottest afternoons. Why Air Conditioners Are Hard on Circuits

  • The panel was marginal all along. In homes where the panel was already crowded, the AC circuit may share capacity in ways that only fail under peak summer load.

Reading the Symptoms

  • Brief dimming when the AC starts is common and usually harmless in moderation – the startup surge momentarily drops voltage. Pronounced or worsening dimming, though, suggests a loose connection or an undersized service.
  • Trips only on the hottest days point to a system running at its thermal edge – longer compressor cycles heat the breaker and wiring until something lets go.
  • Immediate trips at startup suggest a failing compressor, a shorted circuit, or a breaker that has given up – this pattern deserves prompt attention.
  • A warm breaker face or a hot smell at the panel is an urgent sign: shut the circuit off and have it inspected before running the system further.

Fix the Cause, Not the Symptom

The tempting shortcut – swapping in a bigger breaker – is the one thing not to do. Breaker sizing protects the wire, not the appliance; a larger breaker on the same wire removes the protection while keeping the problem. Real fixes follow the real cause: tightening and testing connections, replacing a worn breaker like-for-like, correcting an undersized circuit, or – when the panel is the constraint – a panel upgrade that gives the home the capacity modern loads assume.
