The Season Between the Stress Tests
Summer works an electrical system hard through the air conditioner; winter works it hard through heating loads and holiday circuits. Fall is the window in between – the right moment to check the system while the weather is mild and scheduling is easy. An hour of attention in October prevents most of the calls we take in January.
At the Panel
- Look and listen. With the panel cover on, note any buzzing, warmth, or scorched smell. A healthy panel is silent and cool.
- Check the labeling. If last winter involved flipping breakers to find the right one, fix the directory now – ten minutes with a helper and some tape.
- Note the history. Any breaker that tripped repeatedly during AC season deserves investigation before heating season gives it a new job. Worn breakers and loose terminations found in fall are easy appointments; found in January they are urgent ones. Our panel and repair team handles both, but fall pricing beats emergency timing every time.
Around the House
- Test every GFCI – kitchen, baths, garage, outdoors. Press TEST, confirm it kills power, press RESET.
- Retire damaged cords. Before space-heater season, discard any extension cord with cracked insulation or loose blades, and plan outlets where cords have become permanent fixtures.
- Check smoke and CO detectors. Test buttons monthly, batteries annually, and replace units past their stamped expiration – heating season is when both risks rise.
- Exercise the sump pump and any battery backups before fall rains arrive.
Outside, Before the Weather Turns
- Inspect outdoor receptacles and covers. In-use covers that cracked over summer let winter moisture reach the outlet. Replace them now – these circuits carry holiday lighting soon.
- Look at the service entrance. Check the mast, meter base, and visible conductors for damage or pulling, especially after storm season. Report utility-side issues; have an electrician address the house side.
- Trim vegetation away from the service drop while it is still easy to see where everything runs.
Generator Owners: This Is Your Month
If a portable or standby generator is part of your winter plan, fall is the moment to test it under load, refresh fuel, and verify the transfer equipment works. A generator that has not run since spring is a hypothesis, not a plan. If you have been meaning to add a transfer switch – or to move from extension cords to a proper standby generator installation – getting on the schedule in fall means the system is proven before the first ice storm, not ordered after it.
For Business Owners
Commercial spaces benefit from the same seasonal pass: exit and emergency lighting tests, panel inspection, GFCI checks in kitchens and restrooms, and a look at heating equipment circuits before they matter. Our commercial team runs these checks efficiently, often outside business hours.
